Nine-year-old Binita Chetry from Assam, India, achieved a historic third place in Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) Series 18, becoming the first Indian finalist in the show’s history. The grand finale aired on May 31, 2025, following her standout audition in March 2025. Binita, a prodigy from Karbi Anglong, captivated judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and Bruno Tonioli with her unique dance-martial arts fusion.

Her dynamic performances, blending acrobatic backflips with intricate choreography, won widespread public votes and global praise. From Talbalijan village in Assam to London’s iconic BGT stage, her journey inspired millions.

A Star Rises from Assam

Hailing from Talbalijan near Bokajan, Assam, nine-year-old Binita Chetry made history as the first Northeastern Indian to reach the Britain’s Got Talent finals. Her March 2025 audition, performed to Tommee Profitt & FJØRA’s cover of “Eye of the Tiger,” featured breathtaking backflips and martial arts-inspired dance moves, earning a standing ovation. Amanda Holden called her a “superhero,” while Bruno Tonioli dubbed her a “fierce little tiger” (ITV, March 1, 2025). Though she missed the Golden Buzzer, her viral performance, shared across YouTube, garnered millions of views, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praising her as a “shining star”. Binita’s dream of buying a “pink princess house” with the £250,000 prize endeared her to fans.

From Semi-Finals to Finale Triumph

Binita’s semi-final performance secured the public vote, propelling her to the top 10 finalists. On May 31, 2025, her finale act—a mesmerizing routine to Lorde’s cover of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”—blended acrobatics and emotional storytelling, earning another ovation. Amanda remarked, “I hope Marvel or some other franchise are looking at you,” highlighting her cinematic flair. Despite magician Harry Moulding taking first and LED dance troupe The Blackouts securing second, Binita’s third-place finish was a landmark for Indian talent. She expressed gratitude, stating, “I’m so happy and proud.

Support System and Training

Binita’s success was fueled by her father, Amar Chetry, a broiler farm owner, who facilitated her training in Guwahati and Jaipur under choreographer Hardik Rawat. The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council provided ₹5 lakh for her finale preparations, with support from leaders like Tuliram Ronghang. Binita credited Rawat, saying, “Without your guidance, I couldn’t do this” (BollywoodShaadis, May 28, 2025). Her prior win as first runner-up in the 2024 Dance Ikon 2 Wild Fire competition showcased her talent, with her 118K Instagram followers celebrating her BGT journey.

A Global Inspiration

Binita’s journey, from a modest village to a global stage, underscores Northeast India’s untapped potential. Covered extensively by outlets like Moneycontrol and IndiaTodayNE, her story inspires young dreamers. Her third-place finish positions her as a trailblazer, with potential for future ventures in dance or Bollywood, carrying Assam’s pride to the world.
