This launch marks a significant step for Toyota as it embraces electrification in one of its flagship models in the Indian premium SUV segment. The new Neo Drive variants combine the Fortuner’s proven performance and rugged appeal with improved fuel efficiency and advanced hybrid technology, catering to evolving consumer preferences for greener and more economical vehicles.

Powertrain and Performance Upgrades
The Toyota Fortuner Neo Drive and Fortuner Legender Neo Drive are powered by the proven 2.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine. This engine originally produces 204 bhp and 500 Nm of torque. However, with the integration of the 48V mild-hybrid system, the combined output increases to 220 bhp and 542 Nm of torque. The mild-hybrid system adds an extra 16 bhp and 42 Nm through an electric motor that works in tandem with the diesel engine.
The 48V mild-hybrid setup comprises a belt-driven starter generator (replacing the conventional alternator), a 48-volt lithium-ion battery pack, and a DC-DC converter to step down voltage for other electrical systems. This system enables regenerative braking, which recovers kinetic energy during deceleration and stores it in the battery for later use. It also smoothens start/stop operations at traffic signals and provides additional torque during acceleration.
Toyota claims this mild-hybrid setup improves fuel efficiency by up to 10% compared to the regular diesel variant. The hybrid system ensures smoother throttle response and a quieter driving experience while retaining the Fortuner’s trademark robust performance and off-road capabilities. The Fortuner Neo Drive continues to offer features such as a high ground clearance, a water wading depth of 700mm, and an advanced four-wheel-drive system, ensuring it remains a capable SUV for challenging terrains.
Design and Interior Features
Visually, the Neo Drive variants maintain the Fortuner’s muscular and commanding presence on the road. The only distinct exterior difference is the ‘Neo Drive’ badging on the tailgate, signifying the inclusion of hybrid technology. The SUVs are offered in both the standard Fortuner and the more premium Legender trims, with no changes to the aggressive front grille, LED headlamps, or sharp body lines.
Inside, the Fortuner Neo Drive offers a premium and tech-rich cabin. Both variants feature an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Legender variant further enhances the in-cabin experience with an 11-speaker JBL audio system that delivers crisp and immersive sound.
Safety remains a strong focus with the inclusion of the Toyota Safety Sense suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). This comprehensive package includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, high beam assist, and forward collision warning. Additionally, the SUV is equipped with a 360-degree panoramic camera system, multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, and electronic stability control, ensuring peace of mind for occupants.
Pricing, Availability, and Booking Details
The Toyota Fortuner Neo Drive mild-hybrid variants have been priced starting at ₹44.72 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning them competitively in the premium SUV segment where buyers increasingly seek fuel efficiency along with power and comfort. Bookings for the Neo Drive variants are open across Toyota’s dealerships nationwide.
Toyota expects deliveries to begin by the third week of June, aiming to capitalize on the rising demand for hybrid vehicles in India. The company also emphasizes the relatively lower maintenance costs and improved fuel economy as strong selling points for these new variants, making them attractive options for both urban and rural buyers.
Strategic Importance and Market Impact
The launch of the Fortuner Neo Drive mild-hybrid variants is a critical move for Toyota as it intensifies competition in the Indian SUV market, which is witnessing rapid adoption of hybrid and electric technologies. With tightening emission norms and rising fuel prices, customers are increasingly looking for vehicles that offer a balance of performance and sustainability.
Toyota’s introduction of a mild-hybrid system in the Fortuner — one of India’s best-selling premium SUVs — signals the company’s commitment to greener mobility solutions without compromising on the ruggedness and reliability that the Fortuner is known for. The Neo Drive variants could influence competitors to accelerate their own hybrid and electric offerings.
Additionally, this move helps Toyota meet the Indian government’s ambitious fuel efficiency and emission targets by gradually increasing the electrification of its vehicle portfolio.
Towards efficiency and sustainability
With the introduction of the Neo Drive 48V mild-hybrid variants, Toyota aims to offer a more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly option in the premium SUV segment. These models combine the Fortuner’s renowned performance and off-road capabilities with modern hybrid technology, catering to the evolving preferences of Indian consumers.
