“Premalu 2” Postponed Indefinitely: Dileesh Pothan Confirms Delay

The much-anticipated sequel to the 2024 Malayalam blockbuster Premalu, officially titled Premalu 2, has been unexpectedly delayed. Co-producer and acclaimed filmmaker Dileesh Pothan confirmed the news, stating that the project is currently on hold with no fixed schedule to resume production. First announced in April 2024 following the runaway success of the original film, fans had expected a 2025 commencement. Instead, the project has been placed on indefinite hiatus.

Focus Shift: Girish A. D.’s Next Venture

At the heart of the delay is the decision to shift creative focus. Instead of immediately proceeding with the sequel, Pothan revealed the team is prioritizing another directorial venture by Girish A. D., the original director of Premalu. “Our next immediate project won’t be Premalu 2, it’s another directorial venture of Girish AD,” he remarked in a media interview, affirming that the sequel is “halted at the moment.”

This strategic pivot seems aimed at sustaining momentum for both the filmmakers and the audience: giving space for a fresh offering by Girish while planning to revisit the Premalu universe later.

Cast Schedules Further Challenge Timelines

The production delay is compounded by the busy schedules of the lead stars—Naslen and Mamitha Baiju. Naslen, who played the endearing Sachin in the original, is currently filming the thriller Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra and is in high demand following his success in Alappuzha Gymkhana (2025).

Mamitha Baiju, praised for her heartfelt performance as Reenu, has equally full professional commitments. She is involved in Dude, opposite Pradeep Ranganathan, and has high-profile Tamil projects lined up—most notably Jana Nayagan, starring alongside Thalapathy Vijay, and Suriya 46, directed by Venky Atluri featuring Suriya. Both actors are currently booked with multiple, overlapping productions, making it difficult to allocate schedules for a sequel shoot.

Why “Premalu” Struck a Chord

To understand the magnitude of this delay, one must revisit the phenomenally successful Premalu (2024). Directed by Girish A. D. and produced by Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan, and Syam Pushkaran, the romantic comedy follows Kerala graduate Sachin who relocates to Hyderabad and falls in love with Reenu, an IT professional. The film blended relatable humour with emotional depth and became a box-office giant—grossing ₹136 crore worldwide and earning a place among the top-grossing Malayalam films ever.

The fresh-faced chemistry of Naslen and Mamitha Baiju drew praise, and the film’s soundtrack by Vishnu Vijay added an evocative layer, further cementing the success. It even found resonance with Telugu audiences, showcasing the ability of Malayalam cinema to cross linguistic boundaries.

Fans in a Holding Pattern

Since the sequel’s announcement on April 19, 2024, followed by confirmation of a June 2025 start from Pothan in January this year, expectations have been high. But the abrupt hold means fans will need to temper their excitement. No new release window—be it for theaters or streaming—has been announced. In fact, reports suggest there’s no confirmed format or platform lined up for Premalu 2.

Online chatter has intensified as viewers clamor for updates. Yet, as of now, the only official communication is that the project is paused in favor of the director’s fresh venture. Dileesh Pothan reiterated that when work does resume, it will likely follow the completion of Girish A. D.’s upcoming film.

Industry Take and What Lies Ahead

The Malayalam film industry, known for its dynamic storytelling and agile production schedules, often capitalizes on sequels quickly, but the Premalu team appears intent on avoiding rushed work. By allowing creative breathing room, the makers aim to maintain the quality and emotional authenticity of the sequel.

Additionally, the move reflects evolving production norms. With talents like Naslen and Mamitha operating across multiple industries—Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu—their availability is becoming increasingly stretched. The decision to regroup later may yield richer performances and a smoother production phase.

Looking Forward

For now, Premalu 2 joins the growing list of high-profile Indian sequels where initial announcements are followed by extended delays. Fans are advised to re-watch the first film, indulge in the soundtrack, and monitor official channels for progress updates.

Meanwhile, audiences can look forward to Girish A. D.’s new movie, and to fresh performances by Naslen and Mamitha in their upcoming ventures. Once they wrap their current commitments, the creative team could reconvene and reignite production on Premalu 2—possibly with renewed vision and clarity.
