Superstar Rajinikanth, a titan of Indian cinema, praised Vishnu Manchu’s mythological epic Kannappa after attending a private screening in Chennai on June 15, 2025. The screening, hosted by Vishnu and his father, veteran actor Mohan Babu, saw Rajinikanth embrace Vishnu, calling the film “super” and a “powerful tribute to Lord Shiva.” Vishnu shared this emotional moment on X, highlighting the significance of Rajinikanth’s approval for his 22-year acting career.

A Heartfelt Endorsement

Rajinikanth, known for his decades-long friendship with Mohan Babu, watched Kannappa with his wife, Latha, who praised the film’s music. Vishnu posted on X, “Last night, @rajinikanth uncle watched #Kannappa. After the film, he gave me a tight hug. I’ve been waiting 22 years for that hug!!!” The screening coincided with the 30th anniversary of Pedarayudu, a 1995 Telugu blockbuster starring both Rajinikanth and Mohan Babu. Mohan Babu shared, “The love and encouragement he gave is something I’ll never forget,” adding nostalgic weight to the moment.

Kannappa’s Grand Vision

Directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh, Kannappa is a pan-Indian mythological saga based on the legend of Kannappa, a tribal warrior who transforms into a devoted follower of Lord Shiva. Vishnu Manchu stars as Thinnadu (Kannappa), with cameos by Akshay Kumar as Lord Shiva, Prabhas as Rudra, Mohanlal as Kirata, and Kajal Aggarwal as Goddess Parvati. Vishnu, who also wrote the story, told Hindustan Times, “I wanted a Lord of the Rings-scale epic with Indian roots.” The film, backed by 24 Frames Factory and AVA Entertainment, is set for a global release on June 27, 2025.

Cultural and Industry Impact

Rajinikanth’s endorsement has amplified anticipation for Kannappa, with fans on X calling it “a cultural milestone” and “Tollywood’s pride.” The film’s star-studded cast and lavish production mirror Ollywood’s push for culturally rich storytelling to rival Bollywood. Vishnu revealed he considered Rajinikanth for a role, but the superstar’s blessings alone have boosted the team’s morale.

Looking Ahead

With its blend of devotion, spectacle, and stellar performances, Kannappa is poised to resonate globally. Rajinikanth’s heartfelt praise underscores its potential to redefine mythological storytelling in Indian cinema, much like Sholay did decades ago.
