Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is reportedly testing a new AI-powered “Quick Recap” feature designed to help users efficiently review unread messages from multiple conversations. This tool is being developed to enhance the user experience, especially for those who return to the app after long intervals and face information overload.

What is a quick recap?
According to WABetaInfo, the feature tracker that closely monitors WhatsApp developments, Quick Recap is currently under development and has been spotted in the latest Android beta version 2.25.21.12. The feature builds upon WhatsApp’s earlier message summary tool, which previously offered single-thread recaps in select regions like the US.
Here’s what the new Quick Recap feature will reportedly allow:
- Users can select up to five chats at a time.
- The app will then generate an AI-driven summary of key messages across those chats.
- This summarization happens on-device using Meta’s Private Processing framework, ensuring privacy and data security.
How It Works
While not yet available to the public or even beta testers broadly, a preview shared by WABetaInfo suggests the following steps to access it:
- Go to the Chats tab.
- Select multiple conversations (up to five).
- Tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner.
- Choose the “Quick Recap” option.
The summaries will then be generated to give users a brief overview of the conversations they missed.
Privacy-First Approach
A major concern with AI summarization features is data privacy. However, WhatsApp has confirmed that Quick Recap is integrated with Meta’s Private Processing technology, which includes:
- End-to-end encryption
- Secure enclaves
- Isolated computation environments
This ensures that neither Meta nor WhatsApp employees can access original messages or summaries. The data is never processed outside the secure environment, according to the company’s security guidelines.
Optional and Customizable
The Quick Recap feature will be entirely optional. Users must manually enable it via WhatsApp Settings, and it will not be turned on by default. Moreover, conversations protected by Advanced Chat Privacy (such as locked chats) will be automatically excluded from summaries.
Availability Timeline
As of now, the feature is not yet live, even for most beta users. However, WhatsApp is expected to:
- Gradually roll it out to select Android beta testers in upcoming builds.
- Eventually make the feature available to all Android users after internal testing and feedback.
No official statement has been issued about an iOS version or public rollout date.
