Delhi Metro highlights safety culture at PHDCCI Fire and Safety Summit

New Delhi, Aug 28 (PTI) The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has stressed the need to build a culture of safety beyond rules and compliance, saying that preparedness and values are as important as technology in protecting lives.

Speaking at the Safety and Fire Summit 2025, organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), DMRC Executive Director Devendra Gill said predictive technologies are being used to detect cracks and failures before accidents occur, but safety cannot rely on machines alone.

“Safety is about culture. It is about not jumping a red light even when no one is watching. That is what saves lives,” he said, recalling his personal experiences of travelling to Himachal Pradesh during monsoons and witnessing how floods were worsened by careless construction.

The summit brought together experts from defence, industry and government, who underlined that “every life counts” and that safety should be treated as a shared responsibility.

Major General Bimalendu Mohapatra, Assistant Directorate General of Quality Assurance within the Indian military, said risks have changed over the years, with modern synthetic materials leaving very little escape time during fire accidents.

He highlighted innovations such as fire-resistant fabrics, drones for fire control, and smart helmets with augmented reality that can help firefighters.

PHDCCI Deputy Secretary General Jatinder Singh underlined that safety measures were not abstract agendas but matters of everyday discipline.

He highlighted new tools like the Sachet App, which can give citizens early warnings and forward protection, calling it a step toward keeping families safe before tragedy strikes. PTI SHB ANM HIG
