Controversy Surrounds ‘Lokah Chapter 1’ Over Offensive Dialogue and Selective Apology

The Malayalam film Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, produced by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films, has come under fire for a controversial dialogue that has offended both regional and religious sensibilities. While the film has garnered attention for its box office success and unique portrayal of a female superhero, it now faces criticism for its portrayal of Bengaluru women and alleged misrepresentation of Hindu traditions.

Offensive Dialogue Sparks Backlash

In a pivotal scene, the antagonist, Inspector Nachiyappa Gowda, portrayed by actor Sandy, refuses his mother’s suggestion to marry a girl from Bengaluru, stating, “Bengaluru girls are dagaar (promiscuous).” This dialogue has been condemned by audiences from Karnataka, who view it as a derogatory stereotype of women from the region. The film’s production house swiftly issued an apology, acknowledging the unintended offense and promising to remove the contentious line. A statement from Wayfarer Films read:

“It has come to our attention that a dialogue delivered by one of the characters in our film Lokah: Chapter One has unintentionally hurt the sentiments of people from Karnataka.”

Despite this apology, some viewers remain dissatisfied, feeling that the response was inadequate and selective.

Religious Sentiments Also Affected

Beyond regional concerns, the film has been accused of portraying Hindu traditions in a negative light. Critics argue that while the apology addressed the regional issue, it failed to acknowledge the offense caused to religious sentiments. One viewer remarked, “Kerala people go to Karnataka for jobs and education, yet local Kerala boys always use slurs against Karnataka women. Now the movie repeats the same. But apologized only for regional sentiments, not for religious.”

Box Office Performance Amidst Controversy

Despite the ongoing backlash, Lokah Chapter 1 has achieved significant commercial success. Released with minimal promotion and just 649 shows across India, the film opened with a collection of Rs 2.7 crore. Within six days, the number of shows increased by 300%, reaching over 1,800, and the film amassed a total of Rs 38.95 crore at the Indian box office. Made on a budget of Rs 30-33 crore, the film’s financial performance indicates a strong audience interest, even amid the controversies.

Public Response and Producer’s Stance

The selective nature of the apology has led to further criticism from netizens. Many feel that the producers addressed the regional offense but overlooked the religious concerns raised by viewers. This has sparked debates about the responsibility of filmmakers in addressing the diverse sentiments of their audience.

Balancing Creativity and Cultural Sensitivity in Modern Cinema

While Lokah Chapter 1 has made a significant impact in the Malayalam film industry with its innovative approach to superhero storytelling, it now faces challenges related to cultural sensitivity. The controversies surrounding the film highlight the delicate balance filmmakers must maintain in representing diverse cultures and traditions. The ongoing discussions underscore the importance of thoughtful and inclusive storytelling in contemporary cinema.
