Television actor Aly Goni has finally responded to the controversy that erupted after a video from a Ganesh Chaturthi celebration went viral, showing him silent while others chanted “Ganpati Bappa Morya.” The actor, known for roles in Yeh Hai Mohabbatein and reality shows like Bigg Boss and Khatron Ke Khiladi, has clarified his stance, citing confusion, religious beliefs, and an absence of wrongdoing.

Viral Video Sparks Online Debate

The clip, recorded at Ankita Lokhande’s home during the festival, captured Aly standing quietly while his partner Jasmin Bhasin and friend Nia Sharma energetically chanted. At one point, Jasmin appeared to urge Aly to join in, but he remained silent, drawing immediate criticism from netizens, some of whom labeled his behaviour disrespectful or promoting “one-sided secularism”.

Meanwhile, fans of the trio rushed to defend them. Nia Sharma publicly supported Aly, emphasizing their celebration of both Eid and Ganpati together and condemning the trolls.

Aly Goni Speaks Out: “It Was My First Time”

In a candid conversation on the FilmyGyan YouTube channel, Aly shared that the Ganesh Chaturthi puja was his first ever. He admitted his silence stemmed from confusion rather than disrespect: “I didn’t even realise it. I was lost in my thoughts… I never imagined something like this could create such a big issue”.

He explained further:

“This is the first time I have gone to Ganpati… I was in my own thoughts… I never paid enough attention and didn’t think that these things could create such a big problem.”

Religious Beliefs and Respect

Aly clarified that chanting and puja conflicts with his personal religious beliefs:

“It’s not allowed in my religion. We don’t do puja… We offer namaz, we pray, and we respect all religions. It is written in the Quran that we must respect everyone, and I do.”

He stressed that his actions were not intended to hurt anyone:

“If I wanted to disrespect any religion, I wouldn’t deck up and go there… I never imagined something like this could become such a major controversy.”

Interfaith Sensitivity in Spotlight

This incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of Aly and Jasmin’s interfaith relationship. A previous controversy resurfaced involving Jasmin wearing an abaya to enter the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi in 2023. Aly defended that decision, explaining that the attire was mandated by the mosque’s dress code, yet the video was misinterpreted online as evidence of forced religious compliance.

He reaffirmed mutual respect in their relationship:

“Jasmin has been with me for the past four years… if she didn’t feel good, I wouldn’t say ‘keep Roza’. It’s her own faith, her own choice.”

Reactions: Support vs. Secularism Debate

Online reactions remain mixed. Many defended Aly’s right to personal religious practice, emphasizing that respect and secularism do not mandate participation in every faith-based ritual. Critics, however, viewed his silence as symbolic neglect during a communal moment.

Nia Sharma’s comments, stating “we celebrate Eid, we celebrate Ganpati together,” aimed to highlight interfaith unity rather than division.

Final Thoughts

Aly Goni’s explanation was simple yet poignant: confusion in an unfamiliar setting, fears of accidental offense, and adherence to his religious boundaries, not disrespect. His public remarks underscore a broader challenge in India’s pluralistic society: balancing personal faith with public expectation.

This episode may prompt a deeper reflection on mutual understanding and empathy. As celebrities increasingly cross cultural and religious lines in public life, the distinction between participating in a ritual and simply respecting beliefs becomes ever more critical.
