Veteran actor Himani Shivpuri recently opened up about her experiences of working with Bollywood’s “Hero No.1” Govinda, shedding light on the superstar’s deep-rooted belief in mahurats (auspicious timings) and how it often disrupted film schedules. Her candid revelations give fans a rare peek into the actor’s behind-the-scenes life—one where superstition frequently collided with professionalism.
The Flight He Refused to Board
In a conversation with Red FM, Himani recalled a bizarre incident during the shoot of a film in Hyderabad. She, along with Raveena Tandon, producer Aruna Irani, and director Kuku Kohli, boarded the flight as planned. But when they reached Hyderabad, Govinda was nowhere to be found.
Kuku panicked, asking, “Chi-chi kahan hai?” (Where is Govinda?), only to be told that Govinda had skipped the flight. Aruna Irani eventually went to fetch him, bringing him later on an evening flight. According to Himani, the actor avoided travel because his astrologers had warned him against it at that particular time.
Superstition Over Scripts
Himani explained that Govinda gradually shifted from being a punctual, fun-loving co-star to someone whose decisions were increasingly dictated by priests and astrologers. “He believed in mahurats for everything—shoot timings, travel plans, even film-related commitments,” she said.
While Shivpuri praised his respectful nature on set, she admitted that such practices caused unnecessary delays and confusion, testing the patience of producers, directors, and co-stars alike.
A Career Stalled by Choices
- Govinda ruled the 1990s with hits like Hero No. 1, Deewana Mastana, and Hadh Kar Di Aapne.
- But as superstition began overshadowing professionalism, the actor’s reputation took a hit.
- Industry insiders often criticized him for being unpredictable, despite his undeniable talent.
Interestingly, Govinda himself has claimed that the industry conspired against him, sidelining him despite his massive box-office success. His choices, however, tell another story—one where belief systems played as big a role as Bollywood politics.
The Star Who Still Charms
Despite the controversies, co-stars like Himani remember Govinda fondly for his warmth and respect. His wife, Sunita Ahuja, too often shares lighthearted anecdotes about his eccentric ways, painting a picture of a man both frustrating and lovable.
When Faith Becomes a Roadblock
Every actor carries quirks, but in Govinda’s case, superstition arguably became his biggest antagonist. Bollywood thrives on discipline, deadlines, and adaptability. For a superstar of his stature to let faith dictate his career not only cost him projects but also stained his professional image.
Yet, fans continue to adore him, proving that charisma sometimes outshines controversies. Govinda, after all, remains a name that defined comedy, style, and energy for an entire generation.
