Bollywood star Deepika Padukone has made headlines again — not for a new release, but for walking away from two of the biggest projects of her career. In 2025, the actress abruptly exited Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit and was later dropped from Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD sequel. Both films starred Prabhas and carried massive budgets, making her back-to-back exits one of the most talked-about episodes in recent Indian cinema.
From a Dream Run to Abrupt Goodbyes
2024 was nothing short of spectacular for Deepika. She delivered:
- Fighter with Hrithik Roshan, playing Squadron Leader Minal Rathore.
- Kalki 2898 AD, her South debut and India’s costliest film (approx. ₹600 crore budget), where she played Sumathi, mother of the prophesied Kalki.
- Singham Again, a cameo that introduced her as DCP Shakti Shetty.
The films cemented her as both a commercial powerhouse and a versatile performer. Yet, just months later, cracks began to appear.
Exit from Spirit: Creative Differences or Dirty PR?
In May, Deepika walked out of Spirit, citing creative disagreements. Insiders claimed clashes over:
- Eight-hour workday demands.
- Remuneration and profit-sharing.
- Certain scenes she was reportedly uncomfortable with.
Things turned ugly when Sandeep Reddy Vanga posted a fiery note on X, indirectly targeting her. Without naming Deepika, he accused a senior actor of “dirty PR work,” leaking story details, and belittling a younger co-star. His parting shot — “Is this what your feminism stands for?” — ignited a storm.
While Deepika chose silence, the controversy divided the industry. Some supported her right to fair working conditions, while others backed Vanga’s uncompromising style.
Dropped from Kalki 2: A Shock Exit
If Spirit was her choice, Kalki 2 was the opposite. On September 18, Vyjayanthi Movies confirmed she would not return for the sequel. Their statement cited the inability to “find a partnership” and subtly stressed that “a film like Kalki deserves that commitment and much more.”
The fallout is massive. Deepika’s role as Sumathi was central to the first film’s mythology — the unborn mother of Kalki, the 10th avatar of Vishnu. Her exit now forces the makers to reimagine the sequel’s narrative and recast one of its most vital roles.
Not Just These Two
Deepika has also stepped away from the long-delayed Hindi remake of The Intern, although she will remain attached as a producer. The move suggests a conscious recalibration of her career.
A Career in Transition
Deepika Padukone’s exits reflect more than scheduling conflicts. They hint at the growing friction between actors demanding healthier work environments and directors guarding their creative control. Her silence amid Vanga’s barbs may be strategic, but it leaves a vacuum where her perspective could have reshaped the debate.
One thing is undeniable: by stepping away from Spirit and Kalki 2, Deepika has shaken up not just casting rooms but also the very conversation around power equations in Indian cinema.
