Amrita Rao, the beloved actress who enchanted audiences as the innocent Sanjana in Farah Khan’s 2004 blockbuster Main Hoon Na, recently shared the invaluable advice Shah Rukh Khan gave her during the film’s shoot, which has shaped her selective approach to roles for over two decades. In an interview with podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia on September 23, 2025, in Mumbai, Rao revealed how Khan’s words during a break in filming became her “criteria” for signing films. The conversation, part of Allahbadia’s popular podcast, delved into her experiences on the set of the film that launched her stardom alongside SRK, Sushmita Sen, and Zayed Khan, resonating with fans in India’s ₹101 billion entertainment industry and 467 million social media users.
A Break on Set Turns into a Life Lesson
Rao recounted a pivotal moment during Main Hoon Na’s production, when SRK was juggling shoots for Kal Ho Naa Ho. During a schedule break, Khan called Rao and her mother to praise her qualities, saying she had “the qualities of a superstar.” He then dropped the golden nugget: “200 filmein aayengi, par humein sirf do karni hai” (200 films will come your way, but we only need to do two). This advice emphasized quality over quantity, urging her to be selective amid Bollywood’s flood of offers. “That’s why I have been so selective,” Rao reflected, crediting it for her discerning choices like Vivah (2006) and Jolly LLB 3 (2025). The film, a commercial success grossing ₹84 crore, marked Rao’s breakthrough, but Khan’s guidance helped her navigate the industry’s temptations.
SRK’s Mentorship: Making Newcomers Feel at Ease
Rao also highlighted Khan’s supportive demeanor on set, where he observed her nervousness as a newcomer and absorbed the energy to make everyone comfortable. “He used to observe that I have newcomers with me and used to take that nervous energy from us,” she said, noting his focus: “Every time the first take was the best take… be so focused ki second take dena hi naa pade.” This temperament, she added, was different from the SRK of today, but his sense of humor remained constant. Main Hoon Na, Farah Khan’s directorial debut, blended action, romance, and comedy, earning 12 Filmfare nominations, including Best Film and Best Actor for SRK. Rao’s role as the general’s daughter opposite Khan’s Major Ram showcased her fresh-faced charm, making her a household name.
A Legacy of Guidance
Amrita Rao’s recollection of Shah Rukh Khan’s advice from Main Hoon Na isn’t just nostalgia—it’s a blueprint for longevity in Bollywood. As she shines in Jolly LLB 3, it reminds us: In an industry of 200 offers, two meaningful films define a career. Khan’s words, spoken two decades ago, continue to inspire, proving true stardom lies in wisdom shared.
