Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan has won his first-ever National Award in the Best Actor category for his performance in Jawan, sparking celebrations among fans and a heated debate between political parties. While many view this as a belated recognition of SRK’s illustrious 30-year career, others question the timing and political undertones of the award.
The National Award, considered the highest recognition in Indian cinema, has often sparked controversies over selection and timing. For SRK, whose films like Swades, Chak De! India, and My Name Is Khan received both critical acclaim and mass appreciation, this win marks a significant milestone in his career.
Political Reactions: BJP vs Congress
The award has unintentionally become a political talking point.
- BJP Perspective: Former BJP MLA Raj Purohit defended the recognition, stating that SRK was awarded purely on merit. Speaking to PTI Videos, he said:
“Many people felt that the Congress overlooked Shah Rukh Khan all these years. The BJP never judged the actor on the basis of religion but recognised his talent and performances. Shah Rukh winning the award counters the accusation that the BJP practices caste or religious discrimination. The saffron party believes in unity, meritocracy, and capability.”
- Congress Perspective: Maharashtra MLA Bhai Jagtap questioned the timing, hinting at potential electoral motives, saying:
“You did not give him a National Award in these eleven years. Why suddenly now? Is it because of Bihar elections or Maharashtra (local body) elections?”
He congratulated SRK as a cultural asset but alleged that the BJP was using the award for political gains.
Fans and Family React
Fans worldwide celebrated the long-overdue recognition. Some lamented that SRK didn’t win earlier for classics like Chak De! India, while others rejoiced at his merit finally being acknowledged.
SRK’s children, Suhana Khan and Aryan Khan, shared heartfelt posts from the award ceremony. They wrote:
“You always said you never win the silver, only lose the gold, but this Silver is Gold… Our hearts are so happy seeing you receive the prestigious National Award. Congratulations papa, we love you.”
Awards and Co-Recipients
Shah Rukh shared the Best Actor award with Vikrant Massey, recognised for his performance in 12th Fail. The win not only highlights SRK’s career-long dedication but also reinforces the diversity of talent in contemporary Indian cinema.
Moving Ahead: Merit, Politics, or Both?
While the award formally recognises Shah Rukh Khan’s talent, the debate around its timing underscores the intersection of cinema, fame, and politics in India. Whether it is a long-overdue celebration of his cinematic legacy or a strategic political gesture, SRK’s fans are unanimous in one sentiment: the superstar deserved this moment, and it has finally arrived.
