Debut director Keerthiswaran’s upcoming Tamil film ‘Dude’ is making headlines with its unique Rajinikanth connection and festive Diwali release. The film, starring Pradeep Ranganathan and Mamitha Baiju, promises to blend nostalgic sentiment with contemporary storytelling.
A Rajinikanth-Inspired Vision
Director Keerthiswaran has revealed the fascinating creative process behind ‘Dude’, sharing that he wrote the entire story while imagining how Rajinikanth would have portrayed the character at age 30. “When I began writing the story, I imagined how Rajinikanth sir would have played this role if he were 30 years old. I wrote it keeping that image in mind—his energy, his attitude, his fire,” the director explained.
The connection goes deeper than mere inspiration. Keerthiswaran wanted to capture the same spark and charisma that made young Rajinikanth a phenomenon and bring it back to contemporary cinema. When he pitched the story to producers, Pradeep Ranganathan was the perfect fit for this vision, agreeing to the project immediately after hearing the narrative.
From Assistant to Director: Keerthiswaran’s Journey
The 27-year-old filmmaker brings impressive credentials to his directorial debut, having worked as an assistant director under acclaimed filmmaker Sudha Kongara for nearly seven years. His experience spans major productions, including ‘Soorarai Pottru’ and other scripts in Kongara’s repertoire.
“I was an assistant director to Sudha Kongara for 8 years. This is my first directorial film. The story was agreed upon in the first meeting with the producer,” Keerthiswaran shared in a recent interview. His transition from assistant to director represents a carefully planned career progression in Tamil cinema.
Star Cast and Production Details
‘Dude’ features Pradeep Ranganathan in the lead role as Aravind, nicknamed “Dude,” alongside Malayalam sensation Mamitha Baiju as Kural. The film marks a significant career move for Mamitha, who gained widespread recognition with her breakout performance in ‘Premalu’ (2024).
The supporting cast includes veteran actors R. Sarathkumar as Kural’s father and Rohini as Agan’s mother, along with Hridhu Haroon, Dravid Selvam, and others in pivotal roles. The film is produced by Mythri Movie Makers, marking their second Tamil production after ‘Good Bad Ugly’ starring Ajith Kumar.
Technical Team and Musical Success
The film’s technical team comprises cinematographer Niketh Bommi, editor Barath Vikraman, and costume designer Poornima Ramasamy. However, the standout element has been the music composed by young talent Sai Abhyankkar, son of renowned playback singers Tippu and Harini.
Sai Abhyankkar’s songs for ‘Dude’ have already created significant buzz, with tracks like “Singari,” “Oorum Blood,” and “Nallaru Po” topping musical platforms. The 20-year-old composer, who gained fame with viral hits like “Katchi Sera” and “Aasa Kooda,” is making his Tamil film debut with ‘Dude’.
Story and Themes
The narrative revolves around two childhood friends, Agan and Kural, who run an event management company in Chennai. While maintaining its romantic core, the film incorporates mass appeal elements and explores themes beyond typical love stories.
Keerthiswaran describes the project as more than a romantic or family drama, intending to convey a socially responsible message from a modern perspective. The story draws inspiration from the sentimental ‘Thaali’ culture of the 80s and 90s, presenting a personal perspective that incorporates growing up in the 90s and the Gen X generation experience.
Trailer Reception and Box Office Expectations
The recently released trailer has garnered over 400,000 views on YouTube, with audiences praising the editing by Barath Vikraman and Sai Abhyankkar’s background music. Social media reactions highlight the film’s emotional depth, with users noting that, like Pradeep’s previous successes ‘Love Today’ and ‘Dragon’, ‘Dude’ appears to have strong emotional connectivity.
The trailer showcases Pradeep in an intense avatar, performing action sequences while maintaining his signature dialogue delivery style. One memorable exchange features Mamitha asking, “With this body, can you even handle ten people?” to which Pradeep confidently replies, “Even if a hundred people come at me, I can handle them all!”
Diwali Release and Industry Competition
‘Dude’ is scheduled for theatrical release on October 17, 2025, coinciding with Diwali festivities. The film faces competition from other young actor releases including Harish Kalyan’s ‘Diesel’ and Dhruv Vikram’s ‘Bison’, creating what industry observers call a packed festive season for Tamil cinema.
The film will be released in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi, positioning it as a pan-Indian venture. Netflix has already secured streaming rights, indicating strong industry confidence in the project.
Industry Impact and Future Prospects
‘Dude’ represents a new wave of Tamil cinema where young filmmakers are reimagining classic elements for contemporary audiences. Keerthiswaran’s approach of channeling Rajinikanth’s youthful energy through modern storytelling techniques could influence future filmmaking trends in the industry.
The collaboration between established production house Mythri Movie Makers and emerging talent like Keerthiswaran, Sai Abhyankkar, and the young cast demonstrates the industry’s commitment to nurturing fresh voices while maintaining commercial viability.
With its unique concept, strong technical team, and strategic Diwali release, ‘Dude’ is positioned to make a significant impact at the box office while potentially launching several careers in Tamil cinema. The film’s success could pave the way for more innovative approaches to classical storytelling elements in contemporary Indian cinema.
