Samsung Electronics has officially launched the Galaxy XR, a mixed reality headset that marks the company’s ambitious entry into the extended reality (XR) market. Unveiled during the “Worlds Wide Open” event on October 21, 2025, the Galaxy XR is the first device built on the Android XR platform, developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. Priced at $1,799, the headset offers a more accessible alternative to competitors like Apple’s Vision Pro.
Immersive Experience Powered by AI
At the heart of the Galaxy XR is Gemini, Google’s AI assistant integrated directly into the device. This allows users to interact naturally via voice, vision, and gestures, enabling tasks such as navigating Google Maps, watching YouTube, or using Circle to Search within a mixed reality setting. The headset runs on the Android XR platform, supporting a wide range of applications optimized for immersive 3D environments.
Specifications and Design
The Galaxy XR boasts impressive hardware specifications:
- Display: 4K micro OLED with a 109° horizontal and 100° vertical field of view.
- Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2.
- Sensors: Six world-facing cameras, four eye-tracking cameras, and multiple IMUs for precise motion tracking.
- Audio: Dual speakers with a six-microphone array for spatial audio and voice commands.
- Battery: Offers up to 2.5 hours of usage with a detachable battery pack.
Weighing just 545 grams, the headset is designed for comfort during extended use. It features a soft-touch face cushion, an adjustable rear dial for fit control, and wide nose cutouts to relieve facial pressure. Side bands add stability, while detachable light shields improve immersion.
Competing in the XR Market
Samsung’s entry into the XR market positions it as a competitor to both Meta and Apple. With a price point significantly lower than Apple’s Vision Pro, the Galaxy XR aims to attract both consumer and enterprise users. The inclusion of Gemini AI enhances the device’s appeal by offering advanced features like object recognition and contextual information through finger gestures.
Future Developments
The launch of the Galaxy XR is just the beginning of Samsung’s XR journey. The company has outlined plans for a full spectrum of XR devices, including wired and wireless XR glasses, as well as AI glasses powered by Gemini AI. Collaborations with eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster are underway to design these upcoming wearables.
Samsung’s long-term vision for XR includes creating an open, scalable ecosystem that allows for seamless integration across various devices and applications. The Android XR platform is designed to scale across a variety of form factors, from headsets to AI glasses and beyond, ensuring a unified experience for users.
Availability
The Galaxy XR is currently available for purchase in the United States and South Korea through Samsung’s official website and Experience Stores. Customers can also opt for financing options, including monthly installments.
The stage is set for next generation
With the Galaxy XR, Samsung is setting the stage for the next generation of immersive computing. By integrating advanced AI capabilities and offering a more accessible price point, the company aims to make XR technology more mainstream and pave the way for future innovations in the field.
