Cyclone Alert: Indian Coast Guard Guides 985 Fishing Boats to Safety in Bay of Bengal

Chennai, Oct 25 (PTI) — The Indian Coast Guard has successfully guided 985 fishing boats from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry to safety as a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal shows signs of intensifying into a cyclone. Authorities have urged fishermen to return to the nearest harbours immediately.

The Coast Guard’s Eastern Region has launched extensive outreach efforts, using ships, aircraft, and coastal radar stations to alert seafarers and fishing communities about the approaching storm. Oil rig operators in the region have also been advised to remain vigilant to protect their assets.

“Indian Coast Guard units have already shepherded around 985 fishing boats to the nearest harbours,” a press release stated. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to preventing any loss of life at sea, consistent with its motto, Vayaam Rakshama (We Protect).

With the northeast monsoon remaining active, the India Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in the coming days. The low-pressure area is expected to strengthen into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 27.
