
Ranchi, Oct 28 (PTI) — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts of Jharkhand till October 31, as Cyclone ‘Montha’ over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a severe cyclonic storm early Tuesday.
According to the IMD, the storm — named ‘Montha’, a Thai word meaning “fragrant flower” — was centred about 190 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 270 km south-southeast of Kakinada, and 340 km south-southeast of Vizag at 5.30 am.
The cyclone is expected to move north-northwestwards and cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada by Tuesday evening or night, with wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.
Under its influence, the IMD forecast heavy rain in Simdega, West Singhbhum, Khunti, and Gumla on Tuesday, followed by very heavy rainfall in Chatra, Garhwa, Latehar, and Palamu on Wednesday.
Rainfall activity is also expected to continue across Giridih, Koderma, Lohardaga, Bokaro, Ramgarh, Hazaribag, Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, Dumka, Godda, Pakur, and Sahebganj on October 30 and 31, the bulletin said.
