UN Report Warns: Global Climate Action Still Too Slow Despite Paris Agreement Progress

New Delhi, Oct 28 (PTI) — A decade after the Paris Agreement, a new UN report has warned that while nations are making progress in cutting greenhouse gas emissions, the pace remains far too slow to avert the most dangerous impacts of climate change.

The 2025 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Synthesis Report, released on Tuesday by UN Climate Change, found that 64 countries’ updated climate plans would collectively reduce emissions by 17% below 2019 levels by 2035 — progress, but insufficient to meet the 1.5°C warming limit.

UN Climate Chief Simon Stiell said emissions are now “bending downward for the first time” but stressed that efforts must accelerate immediately. “The Paris Agreement is delivering progress, but it must work much faster and fairer,” he said.

The 64 NDCs, covering about 30% of global emissions, include commitments from nations such as the US, UK, Japan, Brazil, and Australia. Major emitters like China, India, and the EU are yet to submit updated plans.

The report said the countries will need up to USD 1.98 trillion to meet their targets, highlighting the urgent need for climate finance. It also noted a growing emphasis on adaptation, gender inclusion, and just transition in national strategies.

With the world already 1.3°C warmer than in pre-industrial times, the UN warned that emissions must peak by 2025 and fall 57% by 2035 to keep the 1.5°C goal alive.

COP30, to be held in Belem, Brazil, later this year, is expected to set the course for the next phase of global climate cooperation.
