8th Pay Commission ToR Cleared, Implementation Likely Jan 2026

New Delhi, Oct 28 (PTI): The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the 8th Pay Commission, which is expected to come into force from January 1, 2026, benefiting lakhs of government employees and pensioners.

Once implemented, the commission’s recommendations will impact approximately 50 lakh central government employees and 69 lakh pensioners across the country.

The pay panel will consist of a chairperson, one part-time member, and a member-secretary, with the mandate to submit its recommendations within 18 months of formation. It will be chaired by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai and will also present an interim report to the government.

When asked about the rollout timeline, Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the final date would be determined after the interim report is submitted, but added that implementation is “mostly” expected from January 1, 2026.

The Cabinet had previously given in-principle approval for the formation of the commission in January 2025.
