Beijing, Nov 4 (PTI) China on Tuesday sharply criticised US President Donald Trump’s threat to launch military action against Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians, insisting that no nation has the right to interfere in another country’s internal affairs.
Trump had warned that if Nigeria failed to stop killings of Christians, the US would halt aid and could take military steps to eliminate Islamic terrorists.
Responding to the remarks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning referred to Nigeria’s official rebuttal, which stated that the US claims do not reflect current realities and that the government remains committed to fighting terrorism, ensuring interfaith harmony and protecting citizens’ rights.
“As a comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in pursuing development suited to its national conditions,” Mao said.
She added that China opposes the misuse of religion or human rights as a pretext for sanctions or force.
Mao also commented on reports that Venezuela may seek missiles and drones after recent US strikes on vessels suspected of drug trafficking. She said China is against forceful actions under the guise of combating drug cartels and opposes unilateral operations that threaten peace in Latin America and the Caribbean.
“We hope the US will conduct law enforcement within bilateral and multilateral legal frameworks,” she said.
Mao stressed that China’s cooperation with Venezuela is lawful, between sovereign nations, and “not aimed at any third party”. PTI KJV ZH ZH
