Manipur is gearing up for the grand celebration of its most prestigious cultural extravaganza, the Sangai Tourism Festival, scheduled from November 21 to 30, 2025. The festival marks the return of one of Northeast India’s most significant tourism events after a two-year gap, following the ethnic violence that erupted in the state in 2023. Preparations are in full swing at Hapta Kangjeibung in Imphal, the main venue, with dozens of laborers engaged in festival work, including repainting structures and building temporary stalls. Both state and central police forces have been deployed to ensure a smooth and secure event.

The Festival’s Unique Identity

Named after the Sangai, a rare brow-antlered deer found exclusively in Manipur, the Sangai Festival embodies the state’s commitment to celebrating its emblematic animal and protecting its endangered species. Conceived in 2010 by the state’s Department of Tourism, the festival has evolved into a living archive of Manipur’s composite identity, showcasing the state as a world-class tourism destination. The festival’s name itself reflects Manipur’s dedication to highlighting its unique biodiversity, with the Sangai deer thriving in the floating phumdis of Loktak Lake, Keibul Lamjao National Park, and the state’s serene wetlands.

A Spectacular Display of Culture and Arts

The festival is a grand platform for Manipur’s indigenous and folk culture to shine on a global stage. The state’s classical dance form, Ras Leela, renowned for its distinctiveness, takes center stage alongside captivating performances of tribal dances, including Kabui Naga dance, Bamboo dance, Maibi dance, Lai Haraoba dance, and Khamba Thoibi dance. These performances narrate tales of Manipur’s diverse tribes and their rich cultural heritage. Traditional music and folk shows featuring indigenous instruments complement the dance performances, offering visitors an immersive experience of the state’s artistic prowess and cultural richness.

Indigenous Sports and Adventure Activities

Sports enthusiasts will witness a spectacular showcase of Manipur’s famous martial arts and indigenous games. Thang Ta, a blend of spear and sword skills, demonstrates the warriors’ prowess, while Yubi-Lakpi, resembling rugby with a greased coconut, showcases the state’s athletic traditions. Mukna Kangjei, combining hockey and wrestling, and Sagol Kangjei, modern polo believed to have originated in Manipur, captivate audiences with their unique gameplay. Adventure sports activities, including trekking, whitewater rafting, boat racing, and parasailing, add excitement to the festival, catering to thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Handicrafts, Handlooms, and Culinary Delights

The festival provides a significant platform for Manipur’s exceptional artisans to showcase their creations. Themed heritage park huts display intricate handloom products and indigenous handicrafts, offering visitors a window into the unique lifestyles and creative traditions of Manipur’s various tribes. From bamboo work to Manipuri shawls, every artifact tells a story of generations-old craftsmanship. Food stalls serve authentic Manipuri cuisine, including popular dishes like Eromba, Singju, Chamthong, and Nga-thongba, allowing visitors to savor the distinctive flavors of the region. The festival also features exhibitions of art and photography capturing Manipur’s scenic beauty and cultural essence.

Venue and Accessibility

The festival primarily unfolds at Hapta Kangjeibung and Bhagyachandra Open Air Theatre (BOAT) in Imphal, with additional activities at Loktak Lake and other venues across the state. Visitors can reach Manipur via Imphal Tulihal Airport, located just 8 kilometers from the main city. The festival operates from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily, with an entry fee of Rs. 50. The state has ensured accessibility for internally displaced persons and local entrepreneurs by waiving commercial stall allotment fees, making the festival inclusive and community-centered.

A Symbol of Unity and Resilience

As the 12th edition of the Sangai Festival unfolds, it stands as a resounding declaration of Manipur’s unbreakable spirit and commitment to preserving its cultural legacy while promoting sustainable tourism and economic growth. The festival serves as a bridge connecting diverse ethnic communities through shared celebration of art, sport, heritage, and cuisine.
