Belagavi (Karnataka), Dec 15 (PTI) — Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly R Ashoka on Monday wrote to Speaker U T Khader, urging him to extend the ongoing winter session of the state legislature by one more week to allow discussion on pending and pressing issues.
In his letter, Ashoka said the winter session, which began in Belagavi on December 8 and is scheduled to conclude on December 19, had effectively been shortened by two days due to adjournments following the deaths of sitting MLAs H Y Meti and Samanuru Shivashankarappa.
“It was decided to hold the winter session in Belagavi from December 8 to 19 but due to some reasons, the session has been shortened by 2 days,” Ashoka said. “There are many burning issues concerning the state, pending discussion in the session. To find solutions to all these issues, I request you to extend the current session for another week,” he added.
Apart from regular question-and-answer sessions, the House has been deliberating on issues related to the development of North Karnataka over the past week. Several important bills tabled during the session are yet to be taken up for discussion and passage.
Belagavi, which borders Maharashtra, has hosted a legislature session once every year since 2006. The Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, modelled on Bengaluru’s Vidhana Soudha, was built to underline that Belagavi is an integral part of Karnataka, amid Maharashtra’s claim over the region. PTI KSU ADB
