Filmmaker Karan Johar has called Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma’s 2017 Tuscany wedding a “covert operation,” crediting its secrecy with reshaping the “texture and DNA” of destination weddings in India. In a recent conversation with wedding planner Devika Narain, Johar recalled how the country “woke up” to the wedding with no advance hint, and said the couple’s intimate, tightly controlled celebration helped set a new template for private celebrity nuptials. Virat and Anushka tied the knot in Italy on December 11, 2017, and have since welcomed two children, Vamika and Akaay.

The Ultimate Surprise Wedding

Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli tied the knot on December 11, 2017, in a picturesque Italian villa, with only close family and friends in attendance. No leaks, no paparazzi frenzy—just dreamy photos released post-ceremony that broke the internet. Johar marveled at the secrecy: “It was a covert operation almost. From her wedding walk to the location, everybody fell in love.” Wedding planner Devika Narain, who joined Johar in the chat with Pulkit Samrat and Kriti Kharbanda, revealed the couple used fake names for bookings and held secret meetings, prioritizing privacy over tradition.

How Virushka Redefined Weddings

Johar emphasized the lasting impact: Couples now opt for personal choices—destination venues, smaller guest lists, and unique themes—inspired by Virat-Anushka’s restraint. “People realized they could do whatever they wanted at weddings,” Narain added, noting the shift from obligation to joy. Eight years later, as the couple celebrates their anniversary with children Vamika and Akaay, their wedding remains the gold standard for modern Indian romance.

A Legacy of Love and Privacy

Karan Johar’s nod isn’t nostalgia—it’s acknowledgment. As Virushka’s “covert” vows inspire generations, it thunders: Can secrecy spark trends? Their timeless tale affirms yes, scripting a saga where love leads quietly in weddings’ wondrous world.
