Dhaka, Dec 23 (PTI) — Bangladesh on Tuesday summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to its Ministry of Foreign Affairs amid concerns over the security of Bangladeshi diplomatic missions in India.
Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam called in the envoy following reports of an emerging security situation around Bangladesh’s missions in several Indian cities, including New Delhi and Kolkata, according to diplomatic sources quoted by Prothom Alo. During the meeting, Verma was requested to ensure enhanced security arrangements for all Bangladeshi missions in India.
This was the second time in the past 10 days that the Indian High Commissioner has been summoned by the Bangladeshi foreign ministry. Since the interim government took charge in Dhaka, Verma has reportedly been called in at least six times over different issues.
Earlier, on December 14, Verma was summoned in connection with an assault on Sharif Osman Hadi, convener of Inquilab Moncho. Following that meeting, the foreign ministry said it had sought India’s cooperation to prevent the attackers from fleeing across the border.
