Dhar (MP), Dec 23 (PTI) Union Health Minister J P Nadda on Tuesday said India has recorded a significant decline in its Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) due to a sharp rise in institutional deliveries, which have increased to 89 per cent nationwide.
Addressing a function after laying the foundation stone for a medical college in Dhar district under the PPP model, Nadda said the Modi government’s focus is on preventive healthcare to ensure people do not fall ill in the first place. “The rate of institutional deliveries in the country has increased to 89 per cent, which led to a significant reduction in the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR),” he said.
MMR measures maternal deaths due to pregnancy or childbirth complications per 1,00,000 live births and is a key indicator of maternal health.
Targeting the Congress, Nadda accused it of neglecting healthcare in tribal regions. “Our tribal brothers supported the Congress party for a long time, but has this party done anything to bring about a change in the lives of this community?” he asked.
Highlighting broader governance outcomes, Nadda said India’s economic position has also transformed under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Eleven years ago, India was counted among the ‘fragile five’ economies, but today we are the world’s fourth-largest economy and will soon become the third-largest,” he said.
The health minister added that the government believes in accountability. “We believe in the culture of report cards, and we can confidently say that we have delivered on what we promised, and even done things we didn’t promise,” he said.
