Shah to visit Andamans, chair parliamentary panel meeting on Jan 3

Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 2 (PTI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Friday for a three-day visit, during which he will chair a meeting of the parliamentary consultative committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs on January 3, officials said.

Shah is expected to reach Sri Vijaya Puram around 9.30 pm and will be received by Lieutenant Governor Admiral (Retd) D K Joshi and senior officials. This will be his second visit to the islands in less than a month, after attending a function on December 12 marking the 116th anniversary of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s poem ‘Sagara Pran Talamala’.

According to a senior Andaman and Nicobar administration official, Shah will chair the parliamentary consultative committee meeting on key national issues at Wandoor on Saturday. He will later attend an event on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Dr B R Ambedkar Institute of Technology (DBRAIT) auditorium in Dollygunj.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai and several Members of Parliament will also take part in the meeting. Shah is also likely to address a public gathering at the ITF Ground or Netaji Stadium on January 3. He is scheduled to leave the archipelago on January 4.

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan is also set to arrive in the islands on Friday morning for an official visit. He will tour Car Nicobar and the Andaman and Nicobar Command to interact with senior defence officials.

In view of the visits by the Home Minister and the CDS, security has been tightened across South Andaman district. The district administration has prohibited the use of drones, remotely piloted aircraft systems and all aerial activities, including paragliding and parachute jumping, around Veer Savarkar International Airport, ITF Ground, Lok Niwas, Wandoor, Chidiya Tapu and Netaji Stadium from Friday to Sunday.
