New Delhi, Jan 2 (PTI) Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday accused the Modi government and the BJP of failing to provide either clean water or clean air to the country, saying the public is bearing the brunt of this governance failure.

Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi over deaths linked to contaminated water in Indore, Kharge said the PM continues to “trumpet” flagship schemes like the Jal Jeevan Mission and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan but has remained silent on the tragedy.

“Narendra Modi ji, who never gets tired of trumpeting the Jal Jeevan Mission and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, is maintaining his usual silence on the deaths caused by drinking contaminated water in Indore,” Kharge said in a post in Hindi on X.

Referring to Indore’s repeated recognition in cleanliness rankings, Kharge said, “This is the same Indore city that has clinched the ‘Cleanest City’ title for the eighth consecutive time in the Swachh Sarvekshan survey. It is shameful that due to the BJP’s incompetence, people are desperate for clean water.”

Kharge alleged that for the past 11 years, the country has been fed “long speeches, lies and deceit, empty promises, and boasts about the ‘double-engine’ government”.

“When ministers are questioned, they resort to abuses and intimidation. Drunk on the arrogance of power, they turn the tables on journalists. The entire machinery swings into action to cover up the misgovernance of BJP governments,” he said.

The Congress chief further alleged that government schemes are “mired in corruption and foul play”, claiming that 10 per cent of the Jal Jeevan Mission funds were meant for purifying contaminated water.

“The Modi government and the BJP have failed to provide either clean water or clean air. The common people are the ones suffering,” Kharge said.

At least 10 people have died in a diarrhoea outbreak caused by contaminated drinking water in Indore’s Bhagirathpura area. Chief Medical and Health Officer Madhav Prasad Hasani said laboratory tests from a city medical college confirmed contamination due to leakage in a water pipeline, though detailed findings were not shared.

Officials said the leakage was found in the main water supply line near a police outpost in Bhagirathpura, at a location where a toilet had been constructed. More than 1,400 residents have been affected by vomiting and diarrhoea over the past nine days. PTI SKC VN VN
