New Delhi, Jan 3 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to Rani Velu Nachiyar and Savitribai Phule on their birth anniversaries, hailing them as enduring icons of courage, reform and nation-building.
In a post on X, Modi described Rani Velu Nachiyar as a legendary queen and among India’s most valiant warriors who embodied courage and tactical mastery. “She rose against colonial oppression and asserted the right of Indians to govern themselves. Her commitment to good governance and cultural pride is also admirable,” he said, adding that her sacrifice and visionary leadership will continue to inspire generations.
Remembering Savitribai Phule, Modi said she was a pioneering social reformer whose life was devoted to transforming society through service and education. He said she remained committed to the principles of equality, justice and compassion, and firmly believed that education was the most powerful instrument of social change. Modi added that her work for the vulnerable and marginalised remains an inspiring example of service and humanity, and that her vision continues to guide the nation’s efforts to build an inclusive and empowered society.
Born in 1730, Rani Velu Nachiyar is regarded as the first Indian queen to wage war against the East India Company and reclaim her Sivaganga kingdom. Savitribai Phule, born in 1831 in Maharashtra and married to social reformer Jyotiba Phule, is considered by many as India’s first woman teacher for her pioneering efforts to educate women, especially from deprived groups, at a time when it was considered a taboo.
