As anticipation builds around the upcoming patriotic war drama Border 2, Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan found himself responding to a curious international fan query, one that sparked discussion around the film’s potential audience beyond India and highlighted the enduring cross-border popularity of his co-star, Sunny Deol.
Dhawan, 38, engaged with fans during a live #VarunSays session on the social platform X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, January 6, ahead of Border 2’s theatrical release scheduled for January 23, 2026. When a user who identified himself as being from Sindh, Pakistan, and a devoted admirer of Sunny Deol’s iconic character Tara Singh from Gadar: Ek Prem Katha asked about the film’s release in Pakistan, the actor offered a thoughtful and appreciative reply.
Fan Question Sparks Viral Response
The Pakistani fan wrote to Dhawan:
“Bhai apki Border 2 Pakistan mein kab release hogi aur main Tara Singh ka bahut bada fan hoon, unko mera salaam kehna” translated as “Brother, when will Border 2 release in Pakistan? I’m a big fan of Tara Singh, please convey my greetings to him.”
While Dhawan did not give a definitive answer regarding Border 2’s release in Pakistan where Bollywood films’ availability can be inconsistent due to political and distribution challenges he did acknowledge the admiration for Sunny Deol across borders. In his reply, he said:
“Border 2 is a film based on the 1971 war and some true events around that. I’m sure Sunny sir ke Pakistan mein bhi fans hain.”
This exchange swiftly went viral, with many praising the actor for his diplomatic yet warm response. It underscores Bollywood’s complex cultural presence in South Asia where films and stars often draw fanbases that transcend political boundaries.
Border 2: A Film Rooted in Historical Conflict
Border 2 serves as a spiritual successor to the 1997 blockbuster Border, which remains one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated war dramas. The sequel revisits narratives from the 1971 India–Pakistan war, focusing on true events and stories of valor drawn from multiple branches of India’s armed forces.
The film is directed by Anurag Singh and produced by Nidhi Dutta. It features an ensemble cast including Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty. The story centers around the emotional and physical sacrifices of soldiers, and like its predecessor, aims to evoke patriotic fervor while honoring military heroism.
Dhawan Shares Personal Connection to the Role
During the session, Dhawan also discussed what drew him to the project. He described how a war narrative requires collective strength, saying that a conflict “can never be won by an individual; it takes all forces to come together,” and humorously added that Border 2 also features “the one-man army Sunny Deol.”
He revealed that his role as Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya, a Param Vir Chakra awardee stands out in his career, as it allowed him to portray a real-life army hero. Dhawan expressed deep respect for the Indian armed forces and said that meeting the families of actual soldiers helped him connect more intimately with his character.
Context: Bollywood and Pakistan Distribution
Dhawan’s response came at a time when the release landscape for Indian films in Pakistan remains uncertain. Since 2019, Indian films have not had regular theatrical releases in Pakistan, so no clarity exists on whether Border 2 will release there.
Industry insiders note that while the film’s subject matter and historical framing could complicate distribution decisions, fan interest from the neighbouring country reflects a continued cultural engagement with Indian cinema, even amid broader political tensions.
Buzz Building Ahead of Release
As Border 2 nears its release date, promotional activity and engagement from the cast have heightened public interest. Dhawan’s response to a Pakistani fan has added another layer to the film’s pre-release narrative, one that balances national pride with shared admiration for cinematic icons.
Border 2 is now poised to open in theatres on January 23, 2026, with expectations high among audiences seeking a blend of historical drama and patriotic storytelling.
