Ahmedabad, Jan 12 (PTI) – Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at the historic Sabarmati Ashram, marking the start of the German leader’s engagements in India.
Founded by Gandhi in 1917, the Sabarmati Ashram was his residence until 1930 and played a pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle, including the launch of the Dandi March.
After the tribute, the two leaders proceeded to the Sabarmati Riverfront, where they inaugurated the International Kite Festival, a flagship cultural event associated with Gujarat’s Uttarayan celebrations.
The visit will continue with bilateral engagements at the Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre in Gandhinagar. Modi and Merz are set to review the progress of the India–Germany strategic partnership, which recently completed 25 years.
Later in the day, the Prime Minister will join delegation-level talks, followed by a joint press statement, officials said.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the two leaders will also interact with business and industry leaders and exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
