Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh), Jan 12 (PTI) – ISRO’s trusted Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PSLV-C62, lifted off successfully on Monday, carrying an earth observation satellite along with 14 other commercial payloads for domestic and international customers.
Marking India’s first space mission of the year, the 44.4-metre-tall, four-stage rocket blasted off from the First Launch Pad at 10:18 am, as part of a launch contract secured by NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL), ISRO’s commercial arm.
After a flight of about 17 minutes, the mission is expected to place the satellites into a Sun-Synchronous Orbit at an altitude of approximately 511 km.
Following the deployment of all satellites, ISRO scientists will restart the fourth stage (PS4) to initiate a controlled de-boost manoeuvre. This will place the final payload — the Kestrel Initial Technology Demonstrator (KID) capsule — on a re-entry trajectory.
The post-launch operations are expected to last over two hours, after which both the PS4 stage and the KID capsule will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and make a splashdown in the South Pacific Ocean, ISRO said.
