Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan has officially missed the Republic Day extended weekend window, with its theatrical release still held up by the ongoing CBFC certification dispute. With the Madras High Court reserving its order in the case, exhibitors and the film’s stakeholders are now looking at February 6 or February 13, 2026 as the next viable release options—though no final date has been announced.
Why February is being considered
The makers had hoped for an order in time to capitalise on the Republic Day corridor, but the case was not listed for January 23, pushing attention to January 27 as the next possible movement in court. With the holiday window slipping away, an early-February release is being seen as a cleaner runway—especially with Sankranti releases tapering off.
The core issue: Certification is still unresolved
The film was originally slated for January 9, 2026, but the release was derailed after the certification process entered litigation. The film went to court, received interim relief, and then faced a stay after the CBFC’s appeal—leaving the release indefinite until legal clarity arrives.
The election clock adds pressure
A key factor now is the approaching Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections. If the Model Code of Conduct kicks in after the election schedule is announced, the film could face heightened scrutiny—especially since Vijay’s party TVK is expected to contest. That’s why a release before mid/late February is being viewed as critical.
Stakeholder stakes: Cost and platform commitments
During the hearing, the producers cited major financial exposure, and Amazon Prime Video threatened legal action on December 31 over the continuing uncertainty around the release date.
About the film
Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan is widely framed as Vijay’s farewell film before a full-time political pivot, with an ensemble including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Priyamani, Prakash Raj and others.
As of now, Republic Day is missed; early-Feb dates are being explored; everything depends on the court order and CBFC clearance.
If the legal knot loosens in time, Jana Nayagan could still land its biggest punch with an early-February release—but until the certificate comes through, the date remains a high-stakes moving target.
