Comedian-actor Kapil Sharma has opened up about the personal lows that shaped his journey—speaking about the loss of his father and a later period of severe depression that derailed his life before he slowly found his way back. Kapil shared these reflections in a recent interview, describing how grief, uncertainty, and public scrutiny tested him at different stages of his career.

“Life Went Completely Off Track” After His Father’s Death

Kapil said the death of his father in 2004 changed everything for him. His father, Jeetendra Kumar Punj, served as a head constable in the Punjab Police and battled cancer for years before passing away—an absence Kapil says still weighs on him daily.

Recalling the emotional void left behind, Kapil described that phase as one where his life went “completely off track,” marking a difficult period of personal and professional uncertainty.

The Breakthrough Moment That Still Hurts

Kapil also revisited his breakthrough victory on The Great Indian Laughter Challenge (Season 3)—and the moment he received the ₹10 lakh prize. He said he cried not just out of joy, but because he immediately thought of his father and how much he would have wanted to witness it.

In the same conversation, Kapil underlined a hard truth he has learned to live with—that some milestones feel heavier precisely because the people you want to share them with aren’t there anymore.

Depression at 36: “I Went Completely Down”

Kapil revealed that later in life—around age 36—he went through a deeply difficult period of depression. He described the phase as a collapse, saying he “went completely down,” while public opinion and industry chatter suggested his career was over.

Kapil recalled how harsh the commentary became at the time and how quickly the narrative turned from stardom to dismissal.

What Helped Him Rebuild

Kapil credited time, perspective, and life stabilising again—both personally and professionally. He pointed to major life changes, including marriage, and said that after he returned, he worked consistently again—mentioning that he went on to deliver 300+ episodes following his comeback.

From Music Dreams to Comedy Stardom

Kapil’s path wasn’t linear. He has spoken earlier about wanting to be a singer, with comedy eventually becoming his calling.

After winning the 2007 reality-show breakthrough, his rise continued through comedy platforms and TV stardom, where his style of mass-friendly humour made him a household name.

Resilience Behind the Spotlight

Kapil’s reflections underline a truth audiences often forget: comedy can be a profession of performance, while the person behind it may still be carrying grief, pressure, and private battles. His story—of losing a parent early, falling hard later, and rebuilding slowly—adds a human layer to the entertainer millions know for laughter.
