Fans have been asking for Mahaan 2 since the credits rolled on the first film—and now Karthik Subbaraj has finally given the clearest update yet: the sequel is real only in idea form, and the actual writing hasn’t begun.

“Small idea… I need to write it”

Speaking at a public event (reports place it in Kerala), Subbaraj said he currently has only a “small idea” for the sequel and needs time to develop it into a full script. In other words: the Mahaan 2 buzz is valid, but the film itself is still far away.

He also indicated that 2027–2028 is the realistic window by the time the sequel actually happens—a timeline that immediately reset expectations for fans hoping for a quick announcement or shoot update.

What this means: no floors date, no official “greenlight” yet

Right now, there’s no confirmed shoot schedule, no casting reconfirmation, and no production timeline—because the script is still at the concept stage. The update is exciting, but it’s also a clear “wait” message: writing comes first, everything else later.

Why Mahaan still has sequel heat

Mahaan (2022) was a rare father-son collision story—Vikram and Dhruv Vikram sharing the screen in a gritty gangster drama that moved from ideology to violence and back to heartbreak. It premiered directly on Prime Video on February 10, 2022, and the cast included Simran, Bobby Simha, Sananth and others.

The film’s core hook—Gandhi Mahaan’s transformation and the father–son conflict—left enough emotional and narrative residue for audiences to keep asking: what next?

Subbaraj’s current slate: why the wait makes sense

Another reason Mahaan 2 is not immediate: Subbaraj is already juggling work. He has been linked to a new Tamil feature with Oscar-winning banner Sikhya Entertainment, with reporting around the film beginning production in Madurai.

Yes, Mahaan 2 is on Subbaraj’s mind—but only as a seed of an idea right now. Until that seed becomes a finished script, the sequel remains a 2027–28 conversation, not a 2026 rollout.
