National Award-winning actor Rajkummar Rao has addressed the online chatter around his noticeably changed appearance after photos and videos from a recent Mumbai event went viral. The actor clarified that the fuller physique and altered hair were part of his preparation for an upcoming biopic on public prosecutor Ujjwal Deorao Nikam, and not linked to any health issue.
Viral clips spark concern
Earlier this week, Rao was spotted at the Bolti Khidkiyaan Short Film Festival in Mumbai, where his new look—particularly the visible weight gain and hair-related changes—triggered a wave of reactions across social media. While several fans expressed concern, others speculated about the reason behind the transformation.
‘My being is through my art’
In a note shared on Instagram, Rao said the transformation was intentional and demanded by the role. He revealed he gained around 9–10 kg to portray Nikam, adding that he prefers achieving character looks through real physical change rather than relying on prosthetics.
He also indicated that the hairstyling decision was part of the realism he was aiming for, even if it meant going against initial advice. The actor’s post stressed that the focus was authenticity, not glamour.
Diet and prep
Rao shared light-hearted details about his transformation diet, mentioning indulgences like pizzas, sweets, aloo parathas and biryani during the phase to meet the physical requirement for the part.
Next: “Ganguly mode”
With the Nikam shoot now wrapped, Rao said he is entering a transition phase as he prepares for his next project—the much-discussed Sourav Ganguly biopic—where he will begin shedding the extra kilos.
He ended by reassuring well-wishers that he is fine and remains committed to pushing boundaries for his craft.
