New Delhi, Feb 17: Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday said “sovereign AI models” have been made available at the AI Impact Summit, and the government is planning major infrastructure to scale access so they can be used widely.
Speaking to PTI, Vaishnaw said the sovereign models match global large AI models on key parameters. He said the next phase of the AI Mission—referred to as “AI Mission 2.0”—will require building large infrastructure to support sovereign models and improve India’s availability at scale.
As part of the initiative, 12 organisations and consortia—spanning startups, industry and academia—have been selected to develop large and small language models using Indian datasets. These include Sarvam AI, Soket AI, Gnani AI, Gan AI, Avatar AI, IIT Bombay Consortium (BharatGen), GenLoop, Zentieq, Intellihealth, Shodh AI, Fractal Analytics Ltd, and Tech Mahindra Maker’s Lab.
Vaishnaw noted that global players have already rolled out large AI models commercially, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
He also said investors remain bullish on India and have finalised investments of more than Rs 20,000 crore, expected to come in over the next one to two years.
Responding to complaints about long queues and logistical issues, the minister said the summit has seen an overwhelming response, with registrations crossing three lakh and sessions running full.
