Veteran comedian Rajpal Yadav has once again found himself at the centre of a heated online discussion after a light-hearted yet controversial remark about jail life during a recent media interaction. While addressing reporters in his long-pending cheque-bounce case, Rajpal casually mentioned that jails should have “smoking rooms” for inmates, saying it would make the experience “a little more bearable.”
The off-the-cuff comment, made with his trademark comic timing, was captured on video and spread rapidly across X, Instagram and WhatsApp groups, dividing netizens into two sharply opposing camps.

Many fans and some social media users defended Rajpal’s remark as harmless humour coming from a man under immense stress. They argued:
- Prison conditions in India are often harsh; small comforts like designated smoking areas could reduce tension and fights among inmates.
- Rajpal was clearly joking to lighten the mood during a painful moment.
Critics
A large section slammed the comment as insensitive and irresponsible:
- Jails are meant for punishment and reform, not comfort. Providing smoking rooms would normalise addiction and send the wrong message.
- Tobacco use causes serious health issues; prisons should promote quitting, not facilitate smoking.
- Rajpal, as a public figure, should be more mindful—especially when speaking about a serious legal situation.
Despite the debate, the conversation raged on across social media, with some treating it as dark humour and others calling it deeply tone-deaf.
