Jim Carrey made a rare red-carpet return to accept an Honorary César (César d’Honneur) at France’s César Awards—then surprised the room by delivering his acceptance speech entirely in French, blending warmth, self-deprecating humour, and an artist’s reflection on performance.

The tribute took place at the 51st César Awards at the Olympia in Paris, where Carrey—best known for iconic hits such as The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind—was honoured for the breadth of his work across comedy and drama.

A French speech, a sculptor’s metaphor, and a heartfelt thank-you

In his remarks, Carrey compared acting to shaping “clay” in a sculptor’s hands, describing each role as something an actor moulds with intention and imagination—an artistic process that, he suggested, connects deeply with audiences when done honestly.

He also used the moment to thank the people closest to him, including his daughter Jane, his grandson Jackson, and his partner Min Ah, whom he called his “sublime companion.”

Carrey closed on a lighter note, joking about his French and telling the audience—roughly—that his French was “almost mediocre,” adding that he’s still learning.

Tracing roots back to France

The French-language speech also served as a nod to heritage. Reports from the ceremony noted Carrey referenced family roots connected to France—adding a personal dimension to the decision to speak in French on one of the country’s biggest cinema stages.

Why this honour matters

The Honorary César is typically reserved for internationally recognised artists whose careers have left a major mark on cinema. The Académie des César listed Carrey as the ceremony’s honorary recipient, underscoring the significance of the tribute within the evening’s official programme.

Several outlets also highlighted that Carrey’s creative identity extends beyond screen work—spanning literature and visual art alongside decades in stand-up, television and film—an angle that has increasingly become part of how he is discussed in recent years.

A spotlight moment after stepping back from Hollywood

Carrey’s appearance also landed in the context of his more private recent years. In interviews covered by international entertainment media, he has spoken about enjoying quieter pursuits—like painting and focusing on personal and spiritual life—while hinting that he feels content with what he’s achieved professionally.

That’s what made the César moment feel especially resonant: a global star returning to the spotlight not to promote a film, but to accept an artistic tribute—then meeting the room on its own cultural turf, in French, with both sincerity and classic Carrey humour.
