Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled has found its villain. Actor Kathryn Hahn has officially been cast as the iconic antagonist Mother Gothel in the studio’s reimagining of the beloved animated musical. The announcement has sparked excitement among fans, many of whom had long imagined Hahn in the role.
Official Announcement Sparks Fan Buzz
The casting was confirmed by Hahn herself through a playful social media post. In the video, she revealed her “outfit of the day,” which included a shirt featuring the villainous character, subtly confirming that she will portray Mother Gothel in the film.
Disney later amplified the reveal by sharing the clip across its official social media platforms, effectively confirming the news. The casting marks a major step forward in the production of the live-action remake, which is currently in development at the studio.
A Perfect Fit for a Disney Villain
Hahn is widely known for her ability to portray complex and mischievous characters, making her a compelling choice for the manipulative Mother Gothel. The villain famously kidnaps the princess Rapunzel and keeps her hidden in a tower to exploit her magical hair, which has the power to maintain youth and beauty.
Many fans believe Hahn’s sharp comedic timing and dramatic range will bring a fresh yet faithful interpretation of the iconic character originally voiced by Donna Murphy in the 2010 animated film.
Star-Studded Cast for the New Adaptation
The live-action remake is already assembling a notable cast. Australian actor Teagan Croft has been cast as Rapunzel, while Milo Manheim will play the charming rogue Flynn Rider.
These characters were originally voiced by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi in Disney’s 2010 animated hit, which earned nearly $600 million globally and became one of the studio’s most beloved modern fairy-tale adaptations.
Creative Team Behind the Film
The project will be directed by Michael Gracey, best known for helming The Greatest Showman. The screenplay is being written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, whose previous credits include Thor: Love and Thunder and Do Revenge. The film is produced by Kristin Burr.
Disney Continues Its Live-Action Strategy
Disney has seen significant success with live-action versions of its animated classics, including films like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. The studio hopes the live-action Tangled will capture the same magic while introducing the fairy tale to a new generation.
While production is still in development and a release date has not yet been announced, Hahn’s casting has already heightened anticipation for the film. With a strong cast and experienced creative team, the upcoming remake promises to re-imagine the story of Rapunzel’s adventure with fresh energy and a formidable new Mother Gothel.
