New Delhi, Mar 12 (PTI) Congress Rajya Sabha member Shaktisinh Gohil on Thursday accused the government of giving in to US pressure and letting President Donald Trump interfere in the country’s affairs, including buying oil.
Participating in a discussion on the working on the Ministry of Rural Development, Gohil also hit out at the government over the trade deal with the US, saying the interest of Indian farmers have not been protected.
Referring to Trump’s repeated claims of him stopping the India-Pakistan clash in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, the Congress member asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come to the House and say that the US President is “lying” and the Opposition will support him.
“You can’t say that,” Gohil said, adding that there must be compulsions as a result of which Trump’s claims are not being disputed.
Responding to BJP member Sangeeta Balwant’s remarks that the respect for India has gone up globally after the Modi government came to power, Gohil said if it were the case then Indians would not have been deported from the US in handcuffs.
Referring to US sanctions on purchase of Russian oil, he said, “From where to buy oil, from Russia or elsewhere, it is our choice, our country decides. How has India’s respect globally gone up?” Without naming late Indira Gandhi, Gohil said once there was a prime minister of India who said “what my nation will do will be decided by my countrymen and my government” and it was then respect for India rose globally.
He said due to the war in West Asia, Indians, particularly in villages, are also suffering because of gas supply disruptions.
On the trade deal with the US, he asked, “What will be the benefit? Have you ever thought what will be the condition of farmers of our country?” BJP members Mahendra Bhatt and Maya Naroliya cited several steps taken by the government under the leadership of Modi for rural development and said India’s journey towards a developed nation will go through its villages.
