Two elephants found dead in river in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district; probe begins

Raigarh, Mar 12 (PTI) Two elephants were found dead in a river in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district, a forest official said on Thursday.

The carcasses of the two jumbos were spotted in Kurkut river in Gharghoda forest range on Wednesday and later retrieved by a team under the divisional forest officer, he added.

“As a precautionary measure, a dog squad and personnel from the electricity department, including a flying squad, have been called to assist in the investigation. The cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem reports are received,” the official informed.

Notably, the Chhattisgarh government had informed in the ongoing Budget Session of the assembly that 38 elephants and nine tigers have died due to various reasons, including electrocution, poaching and infighting, in the last 26 months. PTI COR TKP BNM
