Veteran actor and social activist Shabana Azmi has sparked a fresh debate in the film industry after strongly criticising the culture of “item numbers” in Bollywood. The acclaimed actor recently stated that such songs often portray women in a way that caters to the “male gaze,” raising concerns about gender representation in mainstream cinema.
Speaking at a public event, Azmi argued that item songs frequently reduce women to objects of visual appeal rather than presenting them as meaningful characters within a film’s narrative. According to her, the choreography, lyrics, and camera angles in these numbers tend to focus on sensual imagery designed primarily to attract male audiences.
“Women Surrender to the Male Gaze”
During her remarks, Azmi highlighted how these songs often depict women as “losing control” and submitting entirely to the male gaze. She expressed concern that such portrayals normalize objectification and reinforce regressive stereotypes about women in popular culture.
The actor pointed out that many item numbers have little or no connection to the film’s storyline and are inserted primarily for commercial appeal. In her view, the problem lies not only in the visuals but also in the messaging that these songs convey to audiences. Azmi said that when women are shown as mere spectacles, it undermines the progress made in portraying strong female characters in cinema.
A Call for Responsibility in Filmmaking
Azmi’s comments also addressed the larger responsibility of filmmakers and audiences. She urged creators in the film industry to rethink how women are represented on screen and to move beyond stereotypical portrayals designed purely for entertainment value.
According to the veteran actor, cinema has the power to influence social attitudes, and therefore filmmakers must be mindful of the narratives they promote. She warned that repeated depictions of women as objects of desire can shape public perceptions and perpetuate problematic gender dynamics.
A Consistent Voice on Gender Issues
Known for her outspoken views on social and cultural issues, Azmi has long advocated for gender equality in cinema and society. Over the decades, the actor who has appeared in more than 160 films and won multiple National Awards has consistently used her platform to speak about women’s rights and representation in the arts.
