Bollywood superstar Salman Khan officially announced on March 16, 2026, that his upcoming war drama, previously titled Battle of Galwan, has been renamed Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace. The change, revealed via a striking new poster on social media, has sparked widespread discussion.
Not an Overnight Decision
Lakhia emphasized the title shift was planned from the beginning. “Changing the title may feel sudden to SK sir’s fans, but it was never an overnight decision,” he said. “From the start, we had registered two titles — Battle of Galwan and Maatrubhumi. As we went through the journey of making our film, we realised it was never just about a battle. At its heart, the film is about humanity, empathy, and the silent battles our soldiers fight.” He added that Maatrubhumi (meaning “Motherland”) and the tagline “May War Rest in Peace” capture the film’s emotional core more truthfully — honoring sacrifices while delivering a universal message of peace and hope.
Context of the Change and Broader Sensitivities
The film draws inspiration from the real 2020 Galwan Valley clash in Ladakh, where Indian soldiers showed extraordinary courage in harsh conditions. The original title referenced the specific incident directly. Reports indicate the rename follows diplomatic considerations amid India-China relations and global conflicts (including the Middle East). Chinese state media had previously criticized the project for allegedly distorting facts and promoting nationalism. Some sources suggest Salman received advice from official and strategic quarters to broaden the narrative’s scope, toning down incident-specific elements for wider appeal and alignment with national sentiments.
Film Highlights and Updates
Produced under Salman Khan Films, Maatrubhumi stars Salman as an Indian Army officer (reportedly portraying Colonel B. Santosh Babu), with Chitrangda Singh in a key role. The title track, composed by Himesh Reshammiya and sung by Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal, and Master Mani Dharamkot, adds emotional depth. Originally eyed for an April 17, 2026, release, reports hint at a possible shift to mid-August or later for greater impact and necessary approvals.
