Guwahati, Mar 19 (PTI) Opposition Assam Jaitya Parishad (AJP) on Thursday announced candidates for two more seats, naming its general secretary Jagdish Bhuyan among its nominees.
The regional outfit, part of a Congress-led alliance in the state, had announced its candidates for eight seats on Tuesday.
Bhuyan will be contesting from the Sadiya constituency and Kunki Choudhury from Guwahati Central, as per the latest list shared by the party.
The party is yet to register any win in the Assembly or Lok Sabha polls, having unsuccessfully contested the 2021 state and 2024 Parliamentary elections.
In the first list, the AJP had named its president Lurinjoyti Gogoi from Khowang and working president Rajen Gohain, a former Union minister and an ex-BJP veteran, from Barhampur.
Gogoi had said that the party will be contesting in 10 seats as a united opposition member, while there may be ‘friendly contests’ with other alliance partners in a couple of seats, though talks were on to reach a consensus.
The elections to the 126-member Assam assembly will be held on April 9. Votes will be counted on May 4.
In the outgoing Assembly, the ruling BJP’s strength is 64, while its allies AGP has nine MLAs, UPPL has seven and BPF has three members.
In the opposition camp, the Congress has 26 MLAs, AIUDF has 15 members and CPI(M) has one MLA. There is an Independent legislator as well. PTI SSG NN
