Chennai, Mar 27 (PTI) AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday hailed the union government’s decision to reduce excise duty on petrol by Rs 10, calling it a timely and welcome step taken in the larger national interest.

“I welcome this people-centric decision and appreciate the union government for prioritising economic stability and public welfare during a period of global uncertainty,” Palaniswami said.

Taking to X, the former Tamil Nadu chief minister said the decision under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflects a clear commitment to protect the Indian people from international economic shocks at a time when the ongoing conflict in West Asia involving Iran and Israel has disrupted global oil supplies and driven crude prices upward.

Palaniswami noted that the reduction of excise duty on petrol from Rs 13 to Rs 3 and the complete removal of duty on diesel demonstrates the Centre’s willingness to absorb the financial burden rather than passing it on to the citizens.

The AIADMK leader highlighted that his party had already urged the central government to take proactive measures to safeguard the Indian economy and the common people in light of escalating geopolitical tensions.

He stated that this decisive action shows such concerns have been heard and acted upon for the sake of economic stability and public welfare. PTI JR JR ROH
