Varanasi, Apr 1 (PTI) A 22-year-old man was killed and another seriously injured after a lift allegedly fell down at a madrasa in Varanasi, police said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred late Tuesday night under the Bhelupur police station limits at a madrasa in the Rewri Talab area, where a programme was underway in the community hall, and a large number of people had gathered.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Gaurav Kumar stated that the two young men were descending in the lift when it suddenly lost control and plunged to the ground.

“Asif Adil (22) died on the spot, while the other youth, identified as Hasnain Raza, sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to the trauma centre for treatment,” he said.

The ACP informed that an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the cause of the incident, including whether there was any negligence in the maintenance of the lift.
