Actor and activist Mark Ruffalo has spoken out against the possibility of a nuclear strike on Iran, calling such a prospect “insanity” in a recent post on X. His remarks came amid escalating tensions involving the US, Israel and Iran, as fears over further regional escalation continue to grow.

Ruffalo Warns Against Civilian Catastrophe

Ruffalo said the world must not allow millions of innocent civilians in Iran to become targets of war. In his post, he argued that ordinary people should pressure leaders to stop any move toward a nuclear attack, framing the issue as a humanitarian crisis rather than a geopolitical abstraction.

What Triggered His Reaction

Ruffalo was reacting to social media posts circulating concerns about a possible nuclear scenario involving Iran, including warnings about the devastating human cost for Tehran, a densely populated city. Those posts were amplified after Mohamad Safa, a representative of the Patriotic Vision Association to the UN’s ECOSOC, alleged that the UN was preparing for possible nuclear weapon use in Iran while announcing he was stepping back from his duties. That claim has been reported by several outlets, but it has not been independently confirmed by the UN in the material reviewed.

Context of Rising Tensions

Ruffalo’s comments come at a time when the wider conflict has already heightened international anxiety. Reuters reported last week that debate among Iranian hardliners over whether Tehran should move toward a nuclear bomb has grown louder amid the ongoing U.S.-Israeli attack, even though Iran had not officially changed its nuclear doctrine at that point.

Debate Rekindled Online

Ruffalo’s remarks quickly drew attention online, with supporters praising his anti-war stance and others debating the larger political context. The comments have added to the broader conversation around the human cost of war and the role celebrities can play in calling for de-escalation.
