Chandigarh, Apr 1 (PTI) Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday emphasised crop diversification, horticulture and promotion of high-value fruit crops to enhance farmers’ income.

Chairing a review meeting of Agriculture and Horticulture Department officials, he directed that cluster-based farming models be developed based on soil and climatic conditions to ensure better productivity and higher returns.

The chief minister asked officials to promote fruit cultivation on a large scale and identify areas for clusters of crops such as strawberry, lemon, guava and dragon fruit. He stressed linking farmers with planting material, processing and marketing to increase their income.

He also directed promotion of tissue culture-based production of crops including arhar, soybean, groundnut, pulses, fruit crops and sugarcane.

He said the potential of each district should be scientifically assessed to promote multi-cropping and high-value farming. Saini further called for the development of new hybrid and high-yielding varieties of cotton, mustard, arhar, soybean and pulses, along with research on climate-resilient seeds. PTI VSD MR
