In a historic first, Pope Leo XIV has acknowledged that artificial intelligence (AI) played a role in his decision to adopt his papal name, signaling the Catholic Church’s deepening engagement with the ethical dimensions of emerging technologies.

AI’s Role in Papal Name Selection

During his inaugural address to the College of Cardinals, Pope Leo XIV revealed that AI influenced his choice of name. He drew inspiration from Pope Leo XIII, who addressed social issues during the Industrial Revolution through the encyclical Rerum Novarum. Pope Leo XIV stated, “I chose to take the name Leo XIV… mainly because Pope Leo XIII in his historic Encyclical Rerum Novarum addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution.” He emphasized that today’s Church must respond to a new industrial revolution, marked by developments in AI that pose challenges to human dignity, justice, and labor.

Ethical Concerns Surrounding AI

While acknowledging AI’s utility, Pope Leo XIV expressed concerns about its implications. He highlighted that AI presents challenges to defending human dignity, justice, and labor. This sentiment echoes previous warnings by Pope Francis, who cautioned against a future rich in technology but poor in humanity.

The Vatican has been proactive in addressing AI’s ethical dimensions. In January 2024, the Holy See published a note discussing the relationship between artificial and human intelligence, emphasizing the need to address anthropological and ethical challenges posed by AI.

Calls for Global Regulation

Pope Francis, Pope Leo XIV’s predecessor, had previously called for an international treaty to ensure AI is developed and used ethically. He warned that technology lacking human values of compassion, mercy, morality, and forgiveness poses significant risks. This appeal was partly personal, as Pope Francis had been the subject of an AI-generated image that went viral, demonstrating the potential for AI to spread disinformation.

The Vatican’s concerns align with global efforts to regulate AI. The European Union has been working on comprehensive AI rules, and other nations are considering similar regulations to address the ethical and societal impacts of AI technologies.

The Church’s Technological Engagement

The Catholic Church has been actively engaging with technological advancements. In 2020, the Vatican hosted a dialogue to promote an ethical approach to AI, resulting in the “Rome Call for AI Ethics.” This initiative emphasized that digital innovation should serve human genius and creativity, not replace them.

Furthermore, Indian dioceses have recognized the transformative impact of AI and the digital revolution. They have resolved to educate their communities about the responsible use of digital and AI tools, highlighting the importance of safeguarding against manipulation and abuse.

A Papacy Focused on Ethical Technology

Pope Leo XIV’s acknowledgment of AI’s influence in his papal name choice underscores the Church’s commitment to addressing the moral dilemmas of the digital age. By drawing parallels between the challenges of the Industrial Revolution and today’s technological advancements, he signals a papacy attentive to the ethical implications of AI.

As AI continues to evolve, the Catholic Church, under Pope Leo XIV’s leadership, is poised to play a significant role in guiding ethical discourse and advocating for technologies that uphold human dignity and justice.
