Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, is ablaze with creativity as the third edition of the Arunachal Rang Mahotsav (ARM) transforms the DK Convention Centre into a vibrant hub of global theatre. Touted as the largest and longest theatre festival in Northeast India, ARM 2025 is not only a milestone for the state but also a powerful cultural beacon for the region and the country.
Inauguration: Celebrating Art, Courage, and Human Connection
The festival was inaugurated with much enthusiasm by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who described ARM as a “celebration of art, courage, and human connection” and a symbol of Arunachal’s rising presence on the global cultural map. The opening night featured the premiere of “Robin and Jummi,” a deeply emotive production that left audiences in reflective silence. Gracing the occasion were notable personalities such as Festival Ambassador and acclaimed actor Adil Hussain, alongside Mita Vasisht and Ashok Bhagat, whose presence bolstered the morale of local talent.
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein highlighted the evolution of Arunachal’s theatre culture, emphasizing the surge in youth participation and the growth of international collaborations. Both dignitaries acknowledged the contributions of festival director Riken Ngomle, whose vision has propelled Arunachal Rang Mahotsav onto the international stage.
International and National Participation: Theatre Without Borders
This year’s ARM is drawing unprecedented global attention, with artists and directors from ten countries participating. The festival promises a rich tapestry, featuring performances from across India and nations as diverse as Denmark and Ireland. Over 33 productions are being staged, encompassing contemporary and classical genres as well as experimental performances. The “Route to Roots” theme urges participants and audiences to explore heritage while embracing creativity and inclusivity.
Significantly, the festival is not just showcasing professional troupes. Eight new local productions breathe fresh life into Arunachal’s folklore, while standout acts from across India proved the growing pulse of national theatre. This confluence of global and local underscores ARM’s role as a catalyst for cultural exchange and dialogue.
Festival Activities: Seminars, Workshops, and Cultural Dialogues
True to its reputation, ARM 2025 is more than a series of stage performances. The two-week event is peppered with seminars, director’s talks, panel discussions, and skill-building workshops led by global experts, deepening the learning curve for budding artists and enthusiasts alike. Audiences can also immerse themselves in specially curated exhibitions and cultural evenings, which further contextualize the diverse traditions represented on stage.
Community and Government Support: Nurturing Creativity
The festival enjoys robust support from the state government, led by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, and Tourism Minister P.D. Sona. Authorities have reiterated commitments to providing both infrastructure and mentorship opportunities in the arts, making efforts to ensure that theatre flourishes at the grassroots level. The revival of Arunachal’s theatre movement, a journey sparked by the 50-year celebration of the Legislative Assembly, is bearing fruit by nurturing young talent and ensuring the continuity of Arunachal’s unique stories.
Legacy and Outlook: The Spirit of Renaissance
ARM 2025 stands as a symbol of the region’s commitment to cultural renaissance. As Governor K.T. Parnaik noted at last year’s festival, theatre remains the “soul of a people”; it bridges the past and the future, forging human connections across borders and generations. With over 33 performances, the narratives at ARM do more than entertain; they provoke thought, transmit social messages, and celebrate the diversity that defines Arunachal and its place in the global artistic community.
With another successful edition, Arunachal Rang Mahotsav confidently affirms its status as the Northeast’s theatre capital, kindling community pride and inspiring a new wave of creative expression that promises to echo for years to come.
