Guwahati, Dec 22 (PTI) Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Monday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a distorted version of Indian history during his recent visit to the state. He expressed regret that the Prime Minister “did not pay any tribute” to singer Zubeen Garg, unlike Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
“Prime Minister Modi was in Assam for two days, and addressed the people of the state on several occasions. As expected, the speeches focused on attacking the Congress party and presenting a distorted version of Indian history,” Gogoi, deputy leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, claimed.
Gogoi appeared to refer to the PM’s statement that a conspiracy was hatched to make Assam a part of East Pakistan, with Congress allegedly involved. Modi had said, prior to Independence, the Muslim League and the British were preparing the ground for India’s Partition, and Gopinath Bardoloi opposed the plot to protect Assam’s identity.
Gogoi further criticized Modi for not paying tribute to late Zubeen Garg, nor meeting the singer’s family or acknowledging the grief of his fans. “It is deeply unfortunate that Prime Minister Modi did not pay any tribute to late Zubeen Garg. It is as if the pain and grief of the Assamese people is invisible to him. He does not see us,” Gogoi said.
He alleged that Modi was caught up “in the lights, camera, and the choreographed ceremonies,” treating people as cheerleaders rather than human beings with emotions—a sentiment he said was echoed by youth in Manipur during the PM’s visit.
In contrast, Gogoi praised Rahul Gandhi for visiting the singer’s memorial at ‘Zubeen Khetra’, meeting the grieving family, and “demanding justice.” He noted Gandhi’s multiple visits to Manipur to meet survivors of violence and said, “In millennial terms, Rahul Gandhi gets the Northeast. Northeast is not a slogan, nor is it a laboratory for the people in Nagpur,” taking an apparent dig at the RSS.
Gogoi concluded by emphasizing that the sacrifices of the people of the Northeast have enriched India, asserting, “Northeast deserves respect and will only support those who respect our culture and traditions.”
PM Modi visited Assam over the last weekend.
